Understanding Advent: A Season of Hope and Anticipation
As we light the first candle on the Advent wreath today, we mark the beginning of a sacred journey — the season of Advent. Derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming" or "arrival," Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation for the celebration of Jesus Christ's birth on Christmas Day and His promised return in glory.
Advent invites us to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts amidst the busyness of the season. It spans the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, with each week carrying a unique theme tied to the hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ brings into the world.
The First Sunday of Advent: Hope
The first Sunday of Advent focuses on hope. This hope is not a fleeting wish or passing optimism, but a deep, abiding trust in God’s promises. It reminds us of the prophecies foretold in the Old Testament about the coming Messiah — a Savior who would bring light into a world overshadowed by darkness.
One of the most well-known prophecies is from Isaiah:
"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned."
(Isaiah 9:2)
As we light the first purple candle, often called the "Prophecy Candle," we remember the hope that the prophets kindled in the hearts of God’s people. It is a hope that sustains us today, pointing us toward the fulfillment of God’s plan in Jesus Christ.
Scriptures to Reflect On
Here are the scriptures mentioned earlier, to guide your reflections this week:
-
Isaiah 9:2
"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned." -
Isaiah 40:31
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -
Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
A Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent
Heavenly Father,
As we enter the season of Advent, we thank You for the gift of hope. You have promised light in the midst of darkness and salvation for all who trust in You. Today, we reflect on the words of the prophets and rejoice in the fulfillment of those promises through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Help us to embrace hope, even in uncertain times. Strengthen our faith in Your plans and guide our hearts to prepare for the celebration of Christ's birth. May we be a source of hope for others, sharing Your love through acts of kindness and words of encouragement.
Renew our spirits this week, Lord, and let the light of Your love shine brightly in us. We look forward with joyful anticipation to the day when Christ will come again in glory.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
May the hope of Advent bring peace to your heart and light to your path this week.
